Participating Mentors:
Mentors: We would like to request mentors who have an interest in health and fitness with emphasis on nutrition. We are looking for mentors who can work at at-risk students as well as those who are at the other end of the spectrum in the gifted program.
Description:
Students and mentors will work together in designing and implementing a physical fitness program for competing in an 8K run over a 8 week period. A pre-test and post-test fitness test will be assessed to help determine the success of their physical fitness program. Student will design a brochure to describe their physical fitness program when the project is completed.
Benchmarks:
Benchmarks: 1. Project will meet technology component. 2. Both written and oral communication skills will be addressed. 3. Health curriculum standards will be addressed. Standard 2, Benchmark 1, Indicator: Student develops an a two-week (we'll go 6) personal fitness plan that incorporates a variety of lifelong activities such as aerobics, walking, jogging, and/or roller-blading. Standard 4, Benchmark 1: The studetn will take an active role in developing and maintaining appropriate personal fitness. Indicator: The student will maintain appropriate levels of cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition necessary for a healthy and productive life.

Student Outcomes:
Student Outcomes: Publish a brochure of their fitness plan which includes their pre-assessment and their post-assessment of fitness during their 8 week program. Students will make presentation to an authentic audience. Ideas to be considered are a presentation for the high school AIM EXPO and or presentations to other health classes in the school. Administrators, parents and other people from the community will be invited.

Student Outcomes:
Evaluation of Student Outcomes: Student will write a one-page letter to mentor. The subject of the letter will be a self-evaluation of the project, including what the student did well, what he/she would like to have done to improve upon the project, and what the mentor contributed to the process.
Teacher Role:
Teacher Role: Teacher will a template to help student design their current physical fitness for their pre and post testing. Teacher will identify the elements of the curriculum that will be communicated. During the 8 week program the teacher will have them correspond with their mentors the results and ask mentors for feedback. Teacher will provide computer access two times a week for each class.
Mentor Role:
Mentor Role: Assist student by providing guidance and encouragement to complete the project. Communicate with the student and provide your own personal experiences that relate to the project. Mentors will give testimonials about the importance of good nutrition and fitness in their lives which students will compile in a campaign to promote healthy living. Mentors will critique the information about the health and fitness program throughout the project.
