Project: Preparing for 8K Run Health and Fitness Plan

Step Description Expected Student Results
1 Letter of introduction to mentor. Included in letter will be personal information about school and community that was not included on student application.
Mentor writes intro letter to student explaining community, career,family and personal interests. Students will also evaluate their own fitness and they can share this with the mentor as well.

Mentor will respond to letter of introduction with an introductory letter of his/her own and discuss importance of physical fitness.
Letters of Introduction
2 Students will resrearch and devise an exercise program for training for a 5K race. Exercises should include warm-ups and stretching, fast pace training, moderate training, and slow pace training, and strength training.

Mentor will aid student in finding exercises and devising a final exercise plan based on measurable goals.

Student will discuss fitness goals with mentor and who will be guided by the following questions:
A. How often do you want to work out?
B. How long will your work-out last?
C. What types of activities would you like to do?
D. How will you record and measure your progress in this exercise program?

Student will develop a chart to record data with help of mentor. Student will include Resting Heart Rate at least at the beginning and end of exercise program.
The students will write a message about their goals and their planned work-out schedule.
Student will complete a chart to compile data of work-outs.
Student will keep a log of exercise throughout the project.
3 Tell your mentor if you got started.
If you have started your program, have you felt any soreness? Have you been drinking more water? Research an article that states the benefits of drinking water. Write a one page paper about your findings.
Mentors will aid student in finding appropriate website link concerning an article on the importance of drinking water.
Students will research on the internet for articles about the importance of drinking water while exercising. They will write a one-page paper about their findings using APA format for paper and works cited.
4 Student will share 1st weeks exercise log with mentor.

Student will keep a record of food and liquid intake for the week including amounts.

Start planning the design of your brochure and discuss with your mentor:
1. Title Page
A. Write your name and name of your Mentor.
B. Create an appropriate name for your Fitness Program.
C. Include the hour of your class.
D. You may insert a picture from any graphic art site or clipart
2. Description of your fitness program. (2nd page)
E. How often did you work out?
F. How long did your work-out last?
G. What types of activities did you do?
3. Nutrition, liquids, and supplements for training (3rd page)
A. Include pre-training, and nutrition for day of event and following event.
B. Evaluate your fitness before you began and after you finished your program. Report your findings.
4. Running Apparel (4th page)
A Cold weather apparel
B Warm weather apparel
C Running shoes
5. Thanks to your Mentor (5th page)
6. Pictures of people exercising with activities that you used throughout the program. (6th page)
Mentors are encouraged to email information about fascinating facts on teenagers & physical fitness.

Daily log of liquid and food intake for 1 week.

Students will save a rough draft of their brochure. They need to ask their mentors about 5 fascinating facts about teenagers and physical fitness which is page 4 on the brochure.
5 Discuss the following questions/statements with your mentor:
1. What is your definition of a healthy body?
2. Does your fitness lifestyle reflect your definition you wrote in question #1?
3. Do you have a good body image of yourself?
4. What are your habits, good or bad, about exercising, eating, and drinking water?
5. Ask your mentor what he/she did for exercise this past week and also include your exercise schedule.
Students will identify their definition of a healthy body and answer the questions in the description.
6 Student will research nutrition and supplements for running. Research should include nutrition for training, pre-run, and post-run.

Mentor will aid students in finding articles related to nutrition and supplements for teenage runners.

Mentor will ask student how his/her personal eating habits can be improved.

Student will make an eating plan to improve nutrition.

Student will plan pre- and post-meal for 5K run.

Student will continue to work on brochure sharing additions with mentor who will critique the brochure.
Nutrition plan for training, pre-and post-5K run.
Student will continue to monitor mutritional and liquid intake throughout project.
7 Discuss with your mentor the goals you set for yourself on Feb 10 & 11.

Mentor can discuss goals set by students...checking to see if they have met them.
Ask students about the pre- and post-tests. Maybe they can imporve their mile walk time.
Ask students about their brochure...are they making progress on it?
Message to mentor disscussing the questions in this step. Upload rough draft of brochure for feed-back from mentor.
8 Student will research running apparel for various types of weather.
Student will determine average temperature of race day and plan apparel for the race.
Student will research running shoes.

Mentor will help student find appropriate cites for research of running shoes and apparel.
Student will plan apparel for race day.

Student will continue to work on brochure including apparel in brochure.
9 Discuss with your mentor:
1.Has your resting heart rate changed over the past few weeks?
2.Are you sleeping better?
3.Continue working on brochure and upload it to your mentor.
4.Reflect on your sleeping habits. Have they changed any since you've been exercising?
Write to your mentor and upload brochure.
10 Your brochure is due Wed. March 25. Show your mentor what you have completed at this point. Upload your rough draft of the template to mentor. Ask for final critique.

Brochure should be close to completion.
Continue to record your daily activities on your fitness calendar.
11 Students complete and present their brochures to students, parents,and administration at AIM EXPO.
Student includes the results of the presentation in a letter to mentor.
