Step Description Expected Student Results
1 Students will log onto College in Colorado and complete the Interest Profiler
which calculates their Personality Profile and careers associated with their RIASEC
profile, learn about Career Cluster Model, their personality profile according to
Holland's RIASEC (Realistic, Investigative, Artistic (STEM), Social, Enterprising and
Conventional). Students will view careers within the Career Cluster that the
computer has chosen for them to research. Students will look at career
description, salaries and education needed for the careers they are interested in
researching.
Step One will fulfill 8th grade Language Arts Standard: Critical thinking and
analysis. Students will learn their personality profile and align themselves with a
career cluster
2 Students will get into groups according to their career cluster and narrow the
results down to three career choices using College in Colorado to research and
save to Portfolio. In groups students will discuss the pros and cons to careers
chosen (ie. salaries, job availabilities) then present to class in group their
findings. Students will start a business letter to potential mentors.

This step fulfills Language Arts standard of writing. Student will chose one career
to research with their Mentor. Students will learn to
write a business letter in its proper format, how to attach it to an email and/or
address envelopes and send out letters regular mail. While writing letters
students will self reflect on personal strengths and weaknesses and how these
will play a role in their career choices
3 Students will research what programs their school district currently offers in high
school to
help students jump start their college readiness and/or careers. Students will be
introduced
to the Plan of Study on College in Colorado. Find out relevant problems and
people in that
field. What does excellent, award-winning work look like in that field?
This step helps to fulfill the Language Arts standard for research for small
project
presentation.
4 College Exploration and High School opportunties for career and college
enhancements. A representatives from Skyline High School and Front Range
Community College are coming to speak to students about opportunties for
career enhancements starting as early as sophomore year in High School.
Students will use College in Colorado to explore what college programs exist for
their career of choice. Students will also consider high school pathways that exist
in SVVSD such as STEM academy, IB, Concurrent Enrollment and CDC.
This step fulfulls Language Arts Research analysis using primary and secondary
sources.
5 Students will complete the telementoring application to help match up students
with a mentor from one of their chosen career clusters. Students will use the
Business Letter draft to create a letter for their mentors, introducing themselves
in the form of a business letter. Teacher will have students take a pre-test with
3-4 questions about their chosen career asking them about certain details of the
career. Examples: What are the top 3 careers growing in Colorado in your field?
Name a leader in your field that knows you. How are you collaborating with that
leader? What is the impact of your collaboration? Bureau of labor and statistics
website Colo dept of labor website. This pre-test will gauge what the student
baseline knowledge of his/her chosen career.
This step fulfills Language Arts Standard for writing. Students will finish the
application and will include a letter of introduction to the
mentor explaining his/her interests, goals, and commitment to the project.
6 High School/ College requirements. Student will learn the difference between a
high school
and a college credit. Students will learn how many credits they need to graduate
high
school and then from college. Students will learn to calculate their on GPA off of
Infinite
Campus. Students will research what SVVSD programs require certain GPAs and
prep
coursework. Students will research what courses will be required in terms of their
filed of
study. Student will begin to research what college they might want to consider to
pursue
their career choice. Students will begin their Plan of Study on College
in Colorado
This step fulfills Language Arts Standard for Primary and secondary sources for
research.
1) Students will email their completed Plan of Study to their mentor. 2) Student
and Mentor
will help decide on one college for student to research in order to pursue chosen
career. Students will email mentors and ask what courses they took in high
school to
prepare them
for this career.
7 Budget Project: Students will be randomly assigned to one of four groups to
create a budget.
Four groups: 1) a high school drop out 2) a high school graduate 3) a graduate
with a two year degree 4) a graduate with a four year degree. Each group will
reserach their assigned group outcomes. For example (in general, how much
does a person without a high school diploma make? how much does someone
with a four year degree make etc? Then each group will be given different
sceranios to create a final budget.
This step fulfills a general standard for: math computation, research primary
(with mentor) and secondary (the internet), critical thinking, life style choices
This activity to get students thinking about how important some sort of post
secondary training is for lifelong milestones, such as owning a home, taking
vacations, purchasing cars etc. This helps students realize making good grades
equal making more money. 1) Student will email mentor about possible salary
ranges for their career choices 2) Student and mentor will look at other costs on
a budget that the class might have not included.
8 College Exploration. Each student will make a list of schools they are considering
and
discuss their options with their mentor. Students will factor in a four year cost
for each
school. The goal is to help students consider college and job training options
outside of
the closest neighborhood university or community college. Students will be
presented the
difference between grant, scholarship and loans to pay for education
Math computation: students will calculate the cost of a four year degree at each
university
and compare the costs. 1) Students will email mentors asking what college they
went to and what schooling was neccessary for their career pathway. They will
share the college or trade school they are
considering, alongside an excel spreadsheet calculating cost of that school. 2)
Student will
ask mentor for feedback on high school courses they are considering taking next
year to enhance
career choice and how they got into their colleges.
9 How to Pay for College. Student will learn the difference between a grant,
scholarship and
loan.Students will explore on College in Colorado scholarships and grant
opportunities
available and make a list of possible scholarships they could apply for. Student
will learn
about the many ways to apply for scholarships and what foundations are looking
for in a
young person. 1) volunteer 2) clubs 3) sports etc
Research primary and secondary sources. Student will share their scholarship list
with their
mentor. The mentor will then help them brainstorm possible scholarships they
may not
have included as well as action steps they can take to be eligible for more
(clubs they could join, sports, etc). Students will ask mentors what they would
have done
differently if they were back in 8th grade now. What changes would they have
made?
10 Scholarship Writing. Students will research example writings of scholarship
essays and applications. Students will write essays about themselves to use for
scholarship and job applications
This step fulfills Language Arts standard of writing. 1) Students will email mentor
their essays 2) Students will make revisions based on mentors' comments and
send back revised essay for mentor to read
11 Research college or trade school for career final choice. Student will research
their final
career choice and choose a school (preferrably a colorado school) in which they
will pursue
their career choice. This can be a two year school, a trade school or a four year
university.
Student will choose a school to draw up a plan of study for their college/post
secondary
choice
Research primary and secondary sources. 1) Student will email mentor their
college choice
2) Mentor will help student define and choose final college/trade school to
research
12 Creating a College Plan. Students will organize and prepare their high school
plan of study,
a college plan detailing where they would like to go to school, what they will
study,and how
they will pay for it.
Research primary and secondary sources.1) Mentor will review and help guide
student
research on how to connect with foundations in their community with similar
interests 2)
Students will report back to mentor stating that they contacted establishment via
a business
letter/student will show mentor business letter

research local
workforce places that align with their career choice. Students will create a
business letter
connecting with this workforce site stating their interest to learn more about this
company,
hospital etc. Students will connect with someone in the field and make a
contribution to
their current work.
