Step Description Expected Student Results
1 Student will get to know mentor by writing a letter of introduction. Student will include plans after high school, volunteer work, job experience and a description of their school and/or community.

Second message to mentor will include specific questions about mentor's community and volunteer ideas. Student will include feelings about community service. Student may discuss past community service work.

Mentor will send letter of introduction and discuss his/her views on volunteering for community service.

2 Write a paragraph of 5-7 sentences discussing pros and cons of community service or volunteer work.

Discuss with mentor ideas about a project for volunteering.
Message #1 should include pros and cons of community service

Message #2 should include brainstorming ideas about a project that interest the student.
3 Asks mentor how to organize project

Submit a rough draft of ideas for a final project about community service. Student and mentor should collaborate together and decide the direction to take on the final project. Possible ideas could be posters, brochures, flyers and/or written proposals.



The final product will contain information acquired from class discussions and mentor discussions about community service in general.
4 Message #1 for this week will include a rough draft of the final project.
Ask mentor for improvements to the final project.
Include a thank you message to mentor on the brochure.

Message # 2 for this week will be a letter of reflection to the mentor on how the community service project impacted them.
Include a note of thanks to the mentor for their help on this project.
Submit final draft of project.
