Step Description Expected Student Results
1 Letter of Introduction

Student Role: Student and mentor exchange letters in which student discusses areas of interest in field of choice (math, science or technology). Students are encouraged to share how they chose the career topic to explore and potentially pursue. Students are also encouraged to share what they hope to get out of this program.

Mentor Role: Mentors are encouraged to describe their profession, job, and interest in serving a student in the International Telementor Program.

2 Conduct Initial Research

Student Role: Students will write five questions of interest in the field of their choice to be used in an interview.

Mentor Role: Mentor will brainstorm with student to identify possible topics of research and questions/issues of professional or personal interest. The goal is to draw students to consider provocative questions rather than researching broad topics, like "medicine." For example, students have studied topics like "careers in epidemiology." Another student successfully looked at plans for halting the spread of West Nile Virus. Another conducted research and performed experiments to study the relationship between smoking and high blood pressure.

3 Develop Research Questions

Student Role: Students will interview online with the help of the mentor a person in their field of interest.

Mentor Role: Mentor will aid students in identifying reliable appropriate people to interview.
1. Develop list of research questions for professional contacts via the mentor.
4 Investigate Careers

Student Role: Students with the help of the mentor will further investigate colleges from previous or current list of college interests.

Mentor Role: Share with student strategies for identifying best road for preparation for college and a career. Share relevant experiences concerning career preparation.
1. First Draft of Report Due
5 Students with the help of the mentor will study in depth their field of interest.

Mentor Role: Mentor will provide student with thoughts on how he or she interacts with the various departments of his or her division and/or business. For example, during the course of business, mentors use basic accounting principles or prepare reports used by accountants.
1. List of questions for mentors.
2. Mentor responses regarding interactions with other people.
6 This is the last step for this project. It provides extra time to finish previous steps or extend a given step.

Student Role: Student will present mentor with final draft of PowerPoint and a thank you letter. Student will prepare and submit self-evaluation letter

Mentor Role: Mentor will provide feedback on final report and submit final letter.
