I have a better understanding of the importance of doing well in math.
With the project that we designed to use in collaboration with the telementoring program, the students were very much immersed in what it means to take charge of their futures. Students are more informed and aware of their future options for education and employment in their career field of interest.
How many students would you prefer to directly supervise in the program next year?
80
Please provide some tips on how we can partner with you to expand the program in your area.
Louise March (Race To The Top Counselor) and I are working closely with David Neils on how to best serve our students who will be participating in next year's project.
How would you rate the quality of the matches between your students and mentors overall on a scale of 1 - 5?
3
Please describe any changes you'd like to see that might further improve the quality of the matches.
I would love to see students in my classes working with professionals in their career field of interest. I believe this is paramount in getting the most buy in from our student population. Louise has already done the work of surveying the students coming into eighth grade next year to identify their career cluster and I will be posting a spreadsheet for mentors to sign up according to student career interest before school begins.
Describe a few things you and your students and mentors were able to accomplish through this program that would have been difficult or impossible any other way.
I believe giving them real world interaction with professionals really made the project more realistic and authentic.
How would you rate the quality of the help you received from the International Telementor Center staff throughout this project on a scale of 1 - 5?

How often were you able to communicate with the mentor group as a whole?

How often were your students able to communicate, on average, with the mentors?
Weekly
Describe significant changes that you would like to see in the program or school environment that would improve the effectiveness of the program for you and your students. Please note who would be responsible for making those changes.
As I stated earlier, the biggest change I would like to see based on last year's students feedback is for students to be placed with mentors in their career field of interest.
How has this program assisted you to use technology more effectively?
Using technology on a weekly basis for real world research and we created a website for students to use for all things related to the project and telementor work.
Please note the impact this program has had on meeting state or national standards on a scale of 1 - 5. Where 1 is none and 5 is signifigant
3
Please describe this impact, if any, in your own words.
There were some weeks throughout where the standards were more closely aligned with what I was covering in class. This summer, Louise, another colleague and I rewrote the curriculum associated with this project so that the standards in the project were aligned more directly with the CCSS.
If "students at-risk" are defined as those who have low motivation to learn, what percentage of the students you supervised this year met this criterion.
50%
When you applied to be a teacher contact you were asked to meet the following requirements.
- All student/mentor commmunication is project based
- Participating students receive a subject grade and turn in work at least biweekly
- Teachers should communicate at least biweekly with the mentors
- Students should be self-selected for participation.
- Teachers should expect a high degree of accountability from their students.
- Teachers should respond to specific program problems within 48 hours
How many requirements you were able to meet this year.
4
Please describe which requirements, if any, helped you be successful in the program?
I feel that #1 was what helped me to be most successful in the program. Working side by side with the RTTT counselor, I feel that the students grew tremendously as advocates for their own futures.
Please describe which requirements, if any, were difficult to meet. Please note why these requirements were difficult to meet.
Communication was often most difficult due to the tremendous amount of testing in a PK-8 school. Testing in all grade levels affects our ability to utilize computer carts and labs. Next year, students will all have ipads as their own so this should help me meet this requirement.
If you were helping a new teacher start in this program, what advice would you offer that would aid this new teacher and his or her students to be successful participants?
Communicate honestly with mentors. Collaborate with others in your building who may be a valuable resource. Tie the project into the standards and make coursework relevant to the program as well as your own classroom curricula.
Do you plan to participate in the program next year?
Yes
Please estimate how many students in your school district or city could take advantage of this program next year?
150
What additional training would you recommend for teachers next year?
Pilot the program with a project you are familiar with. That way, you can learn to navigate the website and work on fine tuning little bumps that come up throughout the project.
