Give mentors the expectation of if deadlines are more strict or may change depending on student caseload.
Stay on top of kids like Ryan- he basically stopped responding and I do not believe he completed his project.
I think it would be helpful if the teacher had the student filled out as much as possible on the portfolio or sent over an unfinished document that needed proofing rather than no work at all.
Clearer tracking on what the students should have done
Feedback regarding the quality of the student's final project as well as suggestions for improvement.
The final project was well thought out and had some interesting facts that the student had found on their own. The summary of all the information they obtained over the course of the project was well represented
Did not see final project. I think more frequent checking in of the students would be a good idea, as the student I mentored stated she had procrastinated, asked me to summarize her interview because of the procrastination.
The quality of Katie's final projects were always good quality. My only concern was that perhaps some projects were never completed?
I do not believe he completed his project.
The interviews are a pretty huge commitment that we mentors are asking of perfect strangers. Getting Ryan to write a thank-you note was like pulling teeth- it was quite late. I would appreciate it if teachers emphasize this so that students write their letters in advance of getting a response, and then personalize them once they receive the interview.
I have not yet read the finished project yet.
My student did things a bit late so having a draft due earlier, rubric that requires feedback taken into account and then the final might have helped

Would you consider mentoring new students in the future?

Why or why not.
Great to get to know high school students and work with them to understand key aspect of research
I enjoy helping others, enjoy being part of an educational process.
Enjoy helping young students through planning for college and professional life. Providing guidance on critical thinking skills is beneficial and fun!
Ryan was an outlier- most of my students are just fine.
I feel that I'm not seeing all of their work. However whatever the student gains from my input and learns from this is great. I wish I had had this experience as a student in high school. My parents didn't go to college so it was a very foreign concept to them. Our counselor at HS helped with getting scholarships but didn't help with choosing a career or how to get it started. While I did interview pharmacists before I started on my career path, it was not something driven through school. I did it on my own and volunteered so I would have a better idea. I feel this will save students time and effort to guide them through a process not given to them by their parents.
The most rewarding aspect of participating.
Great input and feedback from both the student and teacher. I knew what they were working on and what support I needed to provide throughout the entire project.
Knowing (or hoping) that I helped guide the student in this project.
Getting to know a new student
I have enjoyed seeing people I consult for the student to give them their feedback that is a different perspective than mine. Having multiple people give them their knowledge helps them have a better grasp of the field.
Nice appreciative note at the end, could tell my student also ended up understanding better what studies would be needed
The most difficult aspect of participating.
None with this student and teacher
It sometimes seemed like this student did not put forth 100% effort.
Knowing when to contact teacher with concerns.
Student non-participation
This specific project involved reaching out to interviewees. Finding them was a fair amount of work
I don't feel that the students keep up with the timeline as written. It is hard to write to them when I don't have data of what they are doing or a paper to read. If I don't hear from them I can give them random input based on what they should be doing based on the timeline. The email from the teachers is helpful, but still not seeing everything I don't think. Which is fine.
First time you've been part of a formal mentoring program.
