Things either the teacher or the Mentored Pathways Staff do to make a similar project more successful.
My student and I needed greater assistance with regards to an interface that was set up for the student to communicate with other professionals. My student was unable to locate it and was not able to interact with as many SME as she could have if this had been set up and shared better.
Teacher -- great syllabus, plan. Additional clarity on role of the mentor/student would be helpful (i.e with reaching out to experts in community) outside of that, it was really WELL THOUGHT OUT and executed.
This project actually worked very well. My biggest concern is always locating suitable experts and then getting them to respond. Iliana worked hard to find people, and that took a big load off me. We also got very lucky with the high response rate.
I understand this is a "Tele"mentoring project. However, since we are so geographically close to the highschool it would have been a benefit to meet with Mrs. Avila to discuss the presentation topics and find out from the student what her expected goal and desired outcome of the presentation was. The topics were very broad and it would have been helpful from the very beginning of the project to have the opportunity to guide and work with the student towards a focused area that she felt she could make a positive impact. For example, the groups topic was obesity. It was not until the end of the project that I was aware that the presentation was to make a case for healthier school lunches to the school board. Gaining knowledge on the entire topic of obesity is beneficial ofcoure, but we could have been more focused if we had identified from the beginning where we were going.
Mrs. Avila communicated regularly and kept us well informed.
The mentor should have been involved in the selection of the project. I would not have recommended one on the subject of teen pregnancy. It was much too broad, and, as such, did not lend itself to research that could produce meaningful results that could give the student(s) a sense of authenticity to their work.
Don't change a thing
keep things the same - no changes need to be done
It seemed like for this project specifically the original intent changed throughout, making it somehwat confusing.

Very satisfying to watch students grow and gain knowledge. I did not get a chance to hear the student and his group do their presentation. I would have like to have seen and heard that.
I apparently was working with the Principal's daughter? I didn't know this until midway - it wouldn't have changed anything I did. I was extremely disappointed in my interchange with this student, with the health professional and instructor) I tried giving feedback and it seemed to fall on deaf ears. Also, I have concerns when the project leaders make spelling errors in their communications. It is difficult to model a professional interchange with students if their teachers and project leaders do not as well. I felt that this project was extremely large in scope, and it needed to be broken down into more bite sized chunks for this age group.
Perhaps enlist the help of professionals in the healthcare/medical community ahead of time to ensure that students have that support right from the start. It is my understanding that not all topics were well supported.
It seeemed the topics of the projects were so vast and large that it made research and contacting subject matter experts difficult. I feel that students could benefit from more coaching and support of ensuring the topics are appropriate and narrow enough to ensure their success.

Feedback regarding the quality of the student's final project as well as suggestions for improvement.
It was great to see the work transform and get better over time. I could sense frustration with the duration of the project, but understand that will come with in depth research and group work. it was a good growing experience... to learn HOW to do a project, not just the outcome.
I wish I could have seen it. However, because the slide show itself was deliberately sparse, just seeing the Powerpoint wouldn't have helped all that much. It's a real kick for me to see videos of my students presenting.
NA. I never saw the final project from the student.
I feel that the final project was very good and commend the group for being able to present in front of other people. It is great experience to prepare them for college. I commend my student, she is so bright and articulate and I feel she did exactly everything she was supposed to do to follow the instructions, in our correspondence and her assignments. I just feel there was a disconnect between the information being requested and provided and what was actually included in the presentation
My student's deck was combined with other members of her group, which showed in the variety formats of the slides. I recommend establishing a template so that the students can choose a common background but have consistency with respect to the overall look of the presentation.
I have yet to see the final project. I don't think the teacher has had a commitment to see it through to the end.
I thought all Adrian's assignments were excellent and interesting.
THe final project was well done.
The students really didn't know they would have to work with others to create a final presentation so it was hard to really give advice as they were working with many other students.
Again - would have enjoyed to actually see and hear the presentation.
I had to pull teeth to get information from this student. And the teacher did not seem to pick up on this even though I wrote her personally to let her know. You had such a need for mentors that I actually followed 3 students this term to help out, but my student experience was difficult in this case, and I felt like my time was not being well used despite my attempts at trying to provide direction.
Based on the information shared, I think that the student did a good job with her research and sharing that information with her class/teacher. She also learned some good lessons about what it means to collaborate with others and to hold herself accountable, which is important.
Unfortunately I never did get to view the actual final powerpoint presntation. I did reveiew Jessika's summary description of her research and felt she did an excellent job on her portion of the project. I would have like to seen the ppt. to see how all of the research of her group came together in the end.

Overall experience in the program.

Would you consider mentoring new students in the future?
2 - No
17 - Yes

Why or why not.
It gives students an educational edge when they receive one-on-one guidance from professionals. Viviana was appreciative and made mentoring her rewarding.
good experience...
:-)
This particular student was never really engaged. I attempted to draw him to participate more by harnessing his interests and helping him develop a project. This was really not very successful. The teacher considered removing the student from the program. I advised we try to develop/motivate the student. I believe the student completed the project, but I am not sure.
I would not be interested in this same type of telementoring unless it was combined with actually meeting with the instructor and the student, at least initially.
I enjoy it, but it depends on my time availability, which varies greatly.
The teacher had very poor communication with ITP staff(her fault) which led to an overall negative experience for me as a mentor. It would have to be a very different situation for me to commit that much time again.
I learn something and enjoy the interaction.
these kids are so Thankful for any help you can give them. this was an awesome group can't wait till next year.
I enjoyed helping the students in any way that I could to create a successful end product.
It is a beneficial experience for the mentor as well.
I feel that it's important to mentor young people and share knowledge, experiences, etc.

The most rewarding aspect of participating.
It was rewarding dealing with an inquisitive, passionate student.
Seeing the growth. Having the back and forth, and understanding the frustrations.
Helping students get jump-started on great communication and self-reliance.
I am always pleased to mentor someone, even if they are not naturally engaged.
The most rewarding aspect was to go the final presentation.
Watching the student's confidence grow and ask more exciting questions.
Working with the student did bring some sense of a positive result developing in the student's focus on what she wanted to do in her career. I THINK she may now have reason to understand that despite very negative feedback from her mother and brother there are people out there to whom she can turn for help and from whom she can derive a greater sense of self worth.
Adrian's findings on the project and his last email to me.
Thankfulness and eagerness to reach out to you for your Help.
I enjoyed the final letter of gratitude.
Probably getting to know and relate a little to my student. To be able to advise him and answer his questions on education and other topics unrelated to the project.
There wasn't anything that stood out for me in this particular experience.
Being able to communicate regularly with the student, support her through the process, and encouraging her to continue to develop her skills/strengths
Meeting Jessika and being another person to encourage, direct, and set her up to succeed. It was a wonderful experience getting connected with the youth in our community and hopefully something from the mentoring program sparked some inspiration, motivation or direction that sparked Jessika's interest or thought process in a way that influenced her in a positive way.

The most difficult aspect of participating.
The file sharing did not go smoothly. I believe part of the problem was that my student could not upload files to the site from an iPad.
Frequency of communication -- sometimes work/life just gets too busy!!
Time constraints. Mondays came around very fast.
It was tough to get this one engaged and actively participating.
I don't feel that too much of the information I shared was included, as the direction of the presentation was developed with the students by the physician mentor who was onsite. My student left the classroom before I had a chance to meet her. Trying to get a response from "experts" is challenging if you do not personaly know them. I think the students may actually have a better response if they seek our and ask the experts themselves.
Logging into the website (which was not that hard).
Not understanding what was going on between teacher and student and her group. There was a lot of behind the scenes turmoil, and I as a mentor was not privy to it. It was hard to know how to guide the student therefore.
Only communicating in writing.
making sure to respond to the student in a timely manner
Sometimes infrequent communication.
Sometimes timelines were difficult to meet. Some things invariably happen when you are busy and have other things going on and you feel like you might be holding up progress.
Student and teacher being oblivious and unresponsive to attempts at obtaining information.
Not being able to meet in person
It seemed that we didn't have enough time towards the end of the project to really grasp where the student was...it seemed so rushed and my student seemed to be struggling with this along with all of the other activities and demands she had in her life. I think if the teacher could have also provided the mentors with an objective and summary statement of the project to help solidify what the students were trying to accomplish it may have helped.
