A nit - my students forgot to make the final website public for me to review. Small matter as it was rectified quickly.
This is the same feedback I provided for Katherine, another student working on this project. This is a nit. I believe that Creighton didn't give me access to his website - an oversight which was easily resolved and not likely to repeat.
I would have liked to have seen the final iMovie...not sure if my student tried to attach it or if it didn't work?
I think field work in the beginning would have helped the students to narrow down their hypothesis. Before starting it would have been nice for all the student to have an opportunity to volunteer time and get feedback from the experts.
Was pretty successful I believe.
Already noted that a better transition between phases would have a slight improvement.
The messages were effective and the timeline worked well. It did feel that the project was two-phased and sort of dropped (changed) towards the end. improving the transition might help.
Be clear up-front when the students will have access to the ITP site, so that a mentor can plan their schedule to have a message waiting for student
Stay on schedule as much as possible, and keep the steps / requirements reasonable. This project had too many steps.
Stay on schedule as much as possible, and keep the steps / requirements reasonable. This project had too many steps.
I would not change a thing ,this project was very well put together and along with the communication.
I can't not really think of anything that could make the project more successful
this project seemed to get off to a rough start
Help students focus in more on a specific research topic. Morgan and I spent a fair about of time honing in on a topic vs. having one pretty lined up from the beginning.
My student did not post any kind of draft paper or presentation for my review. I expected that and also prompted him to do so multiple times. At the end of the project, he indicated he wished I would have helped him edit his paper. What did I miss? Teacher feedback was positive and enthusiastic, but non-specific. I felt like there were expectations for me to review work, but I didn't really see any output from the student other than a very early rough draft. I didn't feel like I really contributed at all to the project. ITP staff e-mails were only sent to tell me I wasn't communicating 2X per week even if there was nothing to review. At the beginning of the project I was advised once per week was the expectation.
None. Everything went smooth.
Feedback regarding the quality of the student's final project as well as suggestions for improvement.
Great work. I was a back up mentor with Katherine and only worked with her during the final month or so for the project so I can't conclude anything before that regarding how she prepared for the final project. But she was very positive during my time working with her and her final project reflected an excellent sense of knowledge of the subject matter, organization, coordination and presentation skills.
Creighton's final project was terrific. I was able to provide him feedback and he responded very positively to my feedback, and used it to hopefully improve his final project.
This was a decent project, and it showed that Carson learned a lot.
This was outstanding work for a 6th grader! Logan took every suggestion I made into account and improved his work as a result. The final project showed his tremendous efforts!
I was fortunate to have a student who was very motivated for this project. The student's final project was a brochure which captured history of flooding in the area, information on flood plain improvements, and suggestions on how to prepare for future potential floods. She did extremely high quality work and was very engaged in the program and project throughout.
Her paper was good and had a lot of detail that she included from her research, both online and personal. I enjoyed communicating with her!
The final project my student submitted included my suggestions for improvement. I was very impressed with the overall quality of the final project. These kids did a great job! I had to keep reminding myself that they were 6th graders. :-)
This was my first time mentoring and I found the quality of Esme's work outstanding. She had great communication. She was not afraid to ask for help. She responded to my feedback.
Ella is evidently a high caliber student, and her abilities are higher than most. Also, her approach is perfect for attaining the best grade; solid drive and low risk. She should step out of her comfort zone more often, take risks, and stretch herself were confidence may be currently low ... she has the abilities to be excellent in anything she does and should be confident of that and grow beyond what is being graded.
I believe the Molly performed excellently and had a high quality project. My only suggestions would be for her to continue to encourage her to continue to learn more about engineering using the numerous professional resources available (construction, manuals, guides, etc.).
Brooke was one of the strongest writers that I have worked with in this program. When she communicated, she asked solid questions and I felt I was helpful. However, her communication was too infrequent for me to feel a big part of her project.
He made a very good stab at a web site.
I didn't see a final project. However, this kid was VERY enthusiastic and engaged throughout the term, so I feel confident that she benefited from the experience. She wrote to me multiple times a week, and was extremely responsive to my suggestions. She was really a pleasure to work with.
nice web site! unfortunately, I only got to see the final project after the student had completed it, so any feedback I had was not useful.
Well researched
I think the quality of the research and text were good. Unfortunately, I have not seen the final version
I think the final project was very well written and informative, should be a little easier to view the final project
the final project was excellent, it would be great to see a video of the kids performing this in front of the class
The student was eager and engaged until her aunt passed away.
my specific student seemed to have trouble consistently communicating and her messages were generally very short, at one point I thought she gave up
I think they grasped some of the high level topics that are related to flood restoration efforts. Perhaps giving some more specific details of their research within the presentation would have been good to do.
I thought the final project was great! The web site which my student help to build worked well. The fact that the teacher paired her up with a student which did research similar to my students was a great idea. It worked well because the web site now is much more informational.
Did not see the student's final project or even a draft. I expected to provide some kind of review. Again, did I miss something?
Superb!
Overall experience in the program.

Would you consider mentoring new students in the future?
0 - No

Why or why not.
I have been a mentor working for this program for a number of years. It's a very satisfying experience for me to work with these young kids and to help them reach their goals.
I felt that I was able to help Creighton grow during the course of the project. We worked very well together
Any mentor would love to work with a student like Logan.
Working with a student is definitely rewarding, and I enjoy the opportunity to influence and help.
Absolutely! I think this is a terrific program, and am trying to gather some additional volunteers for the program for next fall. I will certainly participate again!
When you have a student that wants to learn and is eager to do the project work it is very rewarding working as a mentor.
Absolutely. Loved the experience.
I feel telementoring makes an impact.
I believe telementoring makes a difference.
Have always enjoyed telementoring!
Rewarding
This is my second year in mentoring and I have to say at first I was a little hesitant at first, I think because I was afraid the student would ask me something I couldn't help with but that was silly on my part. I look forward to this every year now and I try to encourage others I work with to participate.
I love it, helping these kids out and they are so appreciative and look forward to your help.
My first experience was great, this was just an exception.
I think mentoring is an important responsibility that professionals in a given field have to expose students to real world issues and the realities of working in a certain field.
Yes, because I learn just as much as they do.
I would like to mentor more students in future, just not sure about my schedule. I feel bad every time I receive a mail from the teacher that I am behind on my reply.
I think it's valuable, so I'll continue but probably only with one student at a time. This was my first try and it felt like all I did was send encouragement e-mails. No real mentoring.
I enjoyed mentoring the student.
The most rewarding aspect of participating.
Seeing Katherine reach her final goal and understanding her excitement in the overall process.
I have been a mentor working for this program for a number of years. It's a very satisfying experience for me to work with these young kids and to help them reach their goals.
Logan's receptiveness to my suggestions for ways he could improve his project, and his frequent communication to let me know what he was working on and what help he needed.
Being of assistance with the research project.
The student engagement for this project was incredible. I was impressed that the student attended town hall meetings to meet experts and learn more. That takes a strong commitment.
I loved seeing the emails from my student each week and her enthusiasm for the project was contagious! She did all the work, but I enjoyed talking with her about the project from start to finish!
The appreciation of the student for helping.
Knowing that I helped a student get a great grade, was reward enough.
Being able to encourage kids to do more with their talents.
Tapping the energy of kids to build a professional passion.
Brooke's feedback that my help was useful.
It's always rewarding to work with kids. You never know what aspect of the interactions will be helpful to them... and you may never know... but it's an honor to be in a position to help them.
The ability to positively impact students
making a difference in ayoung life
The most rewarding aspect is the students Thankfulness and eagerness to reach out to you for your Help. It's kind of exciting to see the email appear in your inbox.
The eagerness with the kids and there gratitude.
Feeling of being able to help.
Reading about the excitement once it clicked in Morgan's mind.
That the kids really listen and take your advise.
Students look up to us for final draft or word. This is both rewarding and also makes us live up to the expectations.
Not real rewarding.
Knowing that your student did a great job in executing your opinions and suggestions.
The most difficult aspect of participating.
Nothing really comes to mind.
Nothing comes to mind
Not receiving responses from the student that indicated the best way I could assist.
The only difficult part of this program was tracking changes to the schedule. Anna did a good job of sending emails to describe changes to the schedule, but it was a bit difficult to understand which elements were being dropped or delayed. On at least one occasion I asked my student how they were doing on a particular step only to find out later that they weren't working on that step any longer.
We had a few problems with understanding how the attachments worked...hers, with my suggested changes in a Word doc. Not sure how it came through to her...but, in the end, with the teacher's assistance, I think it all got worked out okay.
Sometime scheduling conflicts, I know there are steps in place to keep the student from missing out on a mentor feedback, but as a mentor you don't want to be unavailable. Most of the students try so hard and as a mentor I want to do the same.
Was not difficult.
My own work volume.
My own work schedule.
Difficult period for me at work this time around!
I was this student's second mentor for this project. I was very happy for the opportunity to help him, but as you can imagine, it was difficult to try to get a rapport going in an accelerated time frame.
Lack of communication - partly my fault as well!
Getting Busy with work.
The most difficult aspeact is to make sure your respond in a timely manner to your student.
Making sure you repsond to them in a timely manner
Thinking my student gave up.
The distance component is always challenging to me. I wonder if a primarily online with a couple in-class sessions wouldn't be more beneficial? I know that isn't doable for some mentors, but I think face-to-face time is invaluable.
My most difficult aspect was just keeping up. But I worked really hard at getting emails out.
I did not receive much in the way of updates from my student.
No real concrete information to review.
