We welcome mentors who are eager to help students develop the skills necessary to successfully research career fields and are able to provide insight into their career, as well as, insight into related careers.

Description:

Project is designed to bring an awareness of possible career fields in science. In this project the students will research a science career and present their findings to the freshman Biology classes to increase the younger students' interest and knowledge of possible career paths.

Benchmarks:

S.HS. 1.1.3 The student actively engages in using technological tools and mathematics in their own scientific investigations. S.HS. 5.1.1 The student understands technology is the application of scientific knowledge for functional purposes.

Student Outcomes:

Students will create a report and a presentation to be given to various other science classes. Students may be given an opportunity to present on USD 501 Topeka Public Schools television network.

Evaluation of
Student Outcomes:

Students will be graded on the following: Proper useage of research time-Lab papers with questions to be answered each session. Quality of final presentation/visual aids Questions/communication responses at various checkpoints

Teacher Role:

Teacher will provide computer access twice per week and will communicate with mentors and students with weekly plans. Teacher will respond to individual mentor concerns. Teacher will guide students in choosing career paths and assist in communication when necessary.

Mentor Role:

Mentor's will provide first-hand knowledge of their chosen career field. They will also assist in developing writing and presentation skills by offering suggestions or direction for the students.
